GSO Juneteenth: Her Voice, Her Story

This Juneteenth, the GSO presents the complete Zodiac Suite by jazz legend Mary Lou Williams — a 1945 masterwork in twelve movements, each dedicated to a friend and fellow musician born under that astrological sign, including Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, and Art Tatum. A bold fusion of jazz, blues, and modernist classical writing, the suite holds a few surprises along the way. The first half features chamber works by trailblazing Black women composers Jessie Montgomery, Undine Smith Moore, and Florence Price, with the stage transforming between each piece — from solo violin to string quintet to intimate chamber groupings. An unforgettable celebration of the American sound.

A Tribute to Friendship, Heritage, and Harmony

The acclaimed Houston Brass Band joins the Galveston Symphony Orchestra for a spectacular evening honoring 200 years of Norwegian immigration to the United States and the 45-year sister-city bond between Houston, Galveston, and Stavanger, Norway.

Under the baton of renowned Norwegian conductor and violinist Trond Saeverud, the Galveston Symphony performs Harald Sæverud’s Symphony No. 6, “Sinfonia Dolorosa” — a deeply expressive and moving work by the conductor’s own grandfather.

The Houston Brass Band, led by Music Director Richard Spitz, presents the world premiere of Rodney Newton’s newly revised work, Crossings — originally commissioned as Long Ships and reimagined by the composer for this special occasion.
